Postcard From Sydney

“AN·TI·PODE / an-ˈti-pə-ˌdēz / n. 1. the parts of the earth diametrically opposite. 2. the exact opposite or contrary.”- The Oxford Dictionary

Strike up a conversation about Sydney, even a casual one, and religious allusions are bound to crop up. You are baptized by the Icebergs; you are balanced by the yin of glossy developments and the yang of easy-does-it surfing; you are indoctrinated at cafés or haute cuisine restaurants of worship. A world away from our American tendency to define as ‘eithers’ and ‘ors’, the true meaning of antipode surfaced. We’re accustomed to choosing the buzzy energy of Manhattan or the laidback grind of LA, the foodie nirvana of San Francisco or the bygone familiarity of a Charleston street. It is refreshing to witness the Sydneysider’s embrace of the ‘and’: urbane and easygoing, cutting edge and comfortable, reverent toward both the old and the new. The Sydney cultural identity seems to emerge from not having to pick one. This is a rapturous love affair with the moment at hand in its rock pool rituals, its food lovers’ paradises, its cozy neighborhoods and its impromptu catwalks. Sydney is forging a new way forward without a show, a movement, or the making of waves. They are writing their own rules without a hint of defiance. And it couldn’t be more revolutionary.

With Love From the Harbour City,
Katie
