Secret Garden Peeking in The Battery
One of our favorite Charleston afternoons required no reservation and no rental car. We started in The Battery and wended our way up and down Legare, Tradd, King and Meeting Streets in awe of their lovingly kept single houses, all climbing ivy carports and flickering gaslights. Magic alleyways give way to iron-gated courtyards beneath majestic piazzas in stirring color combos like sky blue shutters and pale canary clapboard or soft red bricks with slate trim.

The name itself conjures up a fair amount of Spanish Moss-draped imagery but the mind’s eye paled in comparison to the real thing. This historic state park is one of the most beautiful walks we’ve ever taken.
